Top 6 Olympic events to watch today

Several medal opportunities for Canada

It’s Day 7 at the Rio Olympics, and there’s a ton of Olympic action to watch, including several Canadians in competition.

Here are six events that are worth your time on Friday:

Rowing: 3 Canadian crews in contention

Rowing events have been plagued by inclement weather so far, which has led to full schedules on days when they manage to get onto the water. Friday is shaping up to be one of those days, and there are three Canadian crews in action.

Carling Zeeman of Cambridge, Ont., is in the semifinals in the women’s single sculls race just after 9 a.m. ET. If she finishes Top 3, she’ll race for a medal on Saturday.

In the women’s lightweight double sculls, the Victoria rowing duo of Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee will be racing for a medal in the A final around 9:30 a.m. ET.

And the men’s coxless four team will row for a medal in the A final of its event at around 10:30 a.m. ET.

Women’s soccer: Canada faces France in quarter-finals

Canada takes its perfect 3-0 record into the quarter-finals against France in a rematch of the bronze-medal match from four years ago in London.

Canada has looked impressive in the qualifiers, knocking off a strong German squad on its way to the top of the pool.

But the tourney is in the knockout stages now, so the Canadians can’t afford to lose from here on out if they want to win a medal. Canada takes on France starting at 6 p.m. ET.

Tennis: Nestor, Pospisil playing for bronze

The team of Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil will play Americans Jack Sock and Steve Johnson for the doubles bronze medal on Friday.

Nestor and Pospisil lost in the semifinals to Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez. The Spaniards will face Romania’s Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau for gold.

Track and field events kick off

After sitting on the sidelines to other sports for the first week, track and field events finally begin on Friday. Among the Canadians who will compete are Brianne Theisen-Eaton in the women’s heptathlon, Anthony Romaniw and Brandon McBride in the men’s 800 metres and Natasha Wodak and Lanni Marchant in the the women’s 10,000 race.

Trampoline: Rosie MacLennan seeks to defend London gold

Canada’s flag-bearer Rosie MacLennan will begin her Olympic title defence in women’s trampoline a little after 1 p.m. ET. If she or teammate Samantha Sendel make it through, they’ll go for a medal a little later in the afternoon at around 2:40 p.m.

Boxing: Bujold’s 1st bout

Mandy Bujold’s long Olympic wait ends Friday.

The Kitchener, Ont., native makes her Summer Games debut in the 51-kilogram division at 4 p.m. ET. Bujold, who won gold at the 2015 Pan Am Games, will face Uzbekistan’s Yodgoroy Mirzaeva.
