US Open 2016: Schedule, TV coverage and live streaming for Tuesday
On Tuesday, Serena Williams will play in just her fourth singles match since winning Wimbledon.
With no glaring upsets on the tournament’s opening day, the US Open will continue on Tuesday. The top players in action will include Serena Williams and Andy Murray for the women and men, respectively.
Williams is the top seed and is trying to hold on to her ranking as the top women’s singles player in the world. She can lose her ranking to three different women depending on how the tournament shakes out. On Monday, two of those women — Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza — were victorious in their opening round matches.
Tuesday will see the third, Agnieszka Radwanska, take on American Jessica Pegula for her opener. Radwanska was drawn into Williams’ half of the draw, and the two can meet in the semifinals if they both make it that far, though Radwanska is surely hoping Williams falls before then as she has never beaten her in head-to-head competition.
There isn’t much hope for an actual Williams upset, but she did draw a tough opening opponent for Tuesday in unseeded Ekaterina Makarova. Williams will be favored to advance though and should beat Makarova.
Murray will be in action against Lukas Rosol, and there is no love lost between those two. Rosol got into it with Murray the last time they played, and the Brit wound up telling Rosol that everybody else on the tennis tour doesn’t like him. Regardless, Murray will be favored and is coming off a high of winning his second Olympic gold medal in singles play.
Stan Wawrinka, the third seed on the men’s side, has one of the toughest openers of any top seed in Fernando Verdasco. The high-energy Verdasco was once a top-10 player, and though he’s plagued with inconsistent play that now has him unseeded, he can beat the best on his best days.
Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem are the remaining men’s top seeds that will be in action on Tuesday. Nishikori, the sixth seed, will face Benjamin Becker while Thiem, the eighth seed, will take on John Millman.
On the women’s side, No. 5 seed Simona Halep will be taking on Kirsten Flipkens, while Serena’s sister, Venus Williams, is looking to recover from a rough outing in Rio with a deep US Open run. Venus is the sixth seed and will be taking on Kateryna Kozlova on Tuesday. Finally, the remaining top-10 seed for the women on Tuesday is Karolina Pliskova, who will face Sofia Kenin.
Juan Martin Del Potro is one unseeded man worth taking note of. Del Potro won the tournament in 2009 but has been inconsistent in the years since. Recently, he took a run all the way to the gold medal match at the Rio Olympics, where he fell to Murray, earning the silver. On the way, he took down Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Del Potro will face compatriot Diego Schwartzman on Tuesday.
Coverage of the US Open will be carried by the ESPN family of networks throughout the tournament. Play begins bright and early at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday, with television coverage beginning at 1 p.m. on ESPN. That coverage will run all day until 11 p.m. Live streams of all courts, including those before ESPN picks up its television coverage, will be available online at WatchESPN, with a link to the day’s streams below.
