Three Blue Jays named to MLB All-Star roster

The Toronto Blue Jays will be well-represented at next week’s MLB All-Star Game, as third baseman Josh Donaldson, slugger Edwin Encarnacion and right-hander Marco Estrada were selected to the American League roster on Tuesday.

Victoria, B.C.’s Michael Saunders was chosen as one of five candidates for MLB.com’s All-Star Game Final Vote to decide the 34th man for each side, with voting open until 4pm et/1pm pt on Friday.

Donaldson, making his third appearance in the Midsummer Classic, was voted into the starting lineup last season with more than 14 million online votes. The reigning American League MVP has 20 home runs, 58 RBI and a .298 batting average this season.

“I’m happy I made the All-Star team,” said Donaldson.  “I’m glad to be part of the entire scene, It’s rewarding.”

Encarnacion is third in home runs (22) in the American League this season and leads the majors with 79 runs batted in. He will be making this third All-Star appearance in four years with the Blue Jays.

Estrada, making his first-ever appearance at the All-Star Game, sports the fifth-lowest ERA in the American League (2.93) and is second in WHIP (0.99) behind only Chicago’s Chris Sale.

“I want to be able to pitch,” said Estrada. “It’s my first time and it could be my only time, but the team has to come first. If I can’t pitch for the team, I shouldn’t pitch anywhere else.”

“This means the world to me, this means the world to my family. They’re all very proud.”

Saunders has 15 home runs and 38 RBI with the Blue Jays with a .290 batting average this season.

“I told everyone it was kind of a redemption year for me,” said Saunders. “Playing for the Blue Jays was a dream of mine growing up. Missing all of last year was really hard on me, more mentally and emotionally than it was physically.”

The most Blue Jays to ever appear in an All-Star Game was seven in 1993, with Roberto Alomar, Joe Carter, Pat Hentgen, Paul Molitor, John Olerud, Duane Ward and Devon White taking part in the Midsummer Classic in Baltimore.

The 2016 All-Star Game will be played in San Diego on Tuesday, July 12 with the winning league earning home field advantage for the World Series.
