Radio Hosts Reprimanded after airing Stokes’ ‘brassed off’ Mum

A couple of Kiwi radio presenters have been suspended for airing a phone call from Ben Stokes’ mum after assuring her she wasn’t on air.

Radio Hauraki hosts, Jeremy Wells and Matt Heath aired the phone call with Deborah Stokes after she rang up to complain about the harsh criticism her son received following the T20 final last weekend.

Stokes was hit for four consecutive sixes as the West Indies scored 24 off the last over to win a second World T20 trophy.

Kiwi-born Stokes copped an understandable amount of ribbing across the world, but the criticism from Radio Hauraki was too much for Mrs Stokes.

“I don’t know whether they realise he was actually born and bred in New Zealand and has family all over the country,” she said, unknowingly talking to the hosts.

“And for those who listen to your station, for them to sit and listen to their cousin and their grandson being bagged like that it is absolutely unconscionable.

“I’m his mother and I’m totally brassed off.”

Heath, who spoke to Mrs Stokes, assured her that a complaint would be lodged.

Heath and Wells are well-known across New Zealand for pushing the boundaries and later broadcast the complaint.

Mrs Stokes called back again to complain that the discussion had been made public despite being assured they weren’t on air.

The hosts were “suitably reprimanded” according to a New Zealand Media and Entertainment spokesperson.

Wells and Heath are also part of the Alternative Commentary Collective, which was banned from broadcasting during the 2015 Cricket World Cup after one member walked onto the playing field during a drinks break.
