April Fools’ Day 2016: A round-up of the best and worst sports stories from around the web
Its April Fools day again, and the media have been doing their best to get one over on their readers.
In among the usual transfer stories and latest quotes, there have been a number of outlandish articles that seem too good to be true.
Well, that’s because they are.
Here is a round-up of the best, and worst, April Fools’ stories from around the web.

Metro – John Terry wants England captaincy
We’ve decided that the Chelsea legend has a list of ridiculous demands if he is to return to the England squad.
As well as being skipper, the 35-year-old is keen to drive the team bus and have his no.6 shirt retired after the tournament.
Metro – Rio Ferdinand to become Manchester United manager
Helped out by Ferdinand, we’ve also decided that the Old Trafford legend is now in charge of his former club.
While Louis van Gaal isn’t doing well, it would still be a bold decision to replace him with the 37-year-old defender-come-pundit. and i’m sure Giggsy would have something to say about it.
England Rugby – Twickenham to be turned in to a cabbage patch
In one of the most obvious joke stories, England’s home of rugby is set to be turned in to a cabbage patch.
With the final of the World Rugby Sevens tournament set to take place at the stadium, the owners have apparently decided to return it to its original state.
Arsenal – Emirates to have a retractable sun roof
In what us almost a joke poking fun at their search for money to compete with the top clubs, the Gunners have actually got a sponsor for their April Fools.
The north Londoners claim that their ground will be the first get its own retractable sun roof.
They’ve even got Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to talk about it helping with consistency – a known failure of his own game.
Daily Star – Liverpool top be taken over by Middle Eastern investors
Fairly plausible from the Star, with the Reds being taken over by a mega-rich Middle Eastern group – in a similar manner to Manchester City.
Manager Jurgen Klopp may be hoping that the story becomes true, with the German supposedly promised massive transfer funds.
The Sun – Aston Villa fans to be charged for leaving early
A target for fun throughout the campaign, Villa fans must have had enough by now.
This hasn’t stopped The Sun from having a go at them for leaving early from their terrible matches.
Club bosses are set to charge the Midlands club’s supporters £5 for getting out of Villa Park before watching their latest defeats.
Daily Telegraph – England to be banned from the Euros in case of Brexit
Although the tournament actually starts before the vote takes place, the Telegraph claims the German and French FAs are petty enough to chuck us out as soon as the last-16 round begins.
Having seen the Three Lions beat Germany, the European sides are getting worried and apparently looking for any way to get rid of them.
This might work better if we actually had a chance of winning the Euros.
Daily Express – Wayne Rooney to become a wrestler
Having already starred in a wrestling event recently, the England and Manchester United captain has decided to take the plunge.
Understandably, it was his son asking for Vardy on the back of his England shirt that was the last straw.
The Sun – Darts stars to be thrown out for chucking
Not once but twice from The Sun, who claim that darts stars are in danger of being thrown out for throwing their arrows at the wrong angle.
World no.5 Peter Wright is the man in trouble, and this may be one of the more contrived joke stories out there.
Daily Mirror – Football Manager to bring in mascot creator
Adding to their current ‘manager on the touchline’ creator, the Mirror have decided to poke fun at mascots.
With options including ridiculous hand size and poor visibility, the idea might actually be something the Football Manager makers want to follow up on.
AS – Real Madrid and Barcelona to start cricket teams
Even the Spanish outlets have got involved, with the La Liga giants taking up our beloved summer sport.
Although Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have had their troubles taking up the bat and ball, the fierce rivals are all set to take each other on in ‘El Cricketos’.
