Team Canada raised the flag at a ceremony in the Athletes’ Village in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday.

Saskatoon’s Gavin Schmitt, a six-foot-10 volleyball player, says his bed in the Olympic athletes’ village is long enough and fits him just fine.

Canada’s athletes joined those from Angola, Malaysia and Figi in a welcoming party for the four countries at the village just outside the Barra Olympic Park on the west side of Rio.

They were entertained with dancing and song.

Canada is looking to improve on an 18-medal performance from the London Olympics in 2012. Rosie MacLennan, Canada’s lone gold-medallist from those Games, will be the flag bearer at Friday’s opening ceremony.

Water leaks, exposed electrical wires and inadequate plumbing delayed Australia’s move into the village last week.

But Schmitt and others in the Canadian contingent of 314 athletes say they have light, hot water, functioning toilets and good food in the village.

Canada’s first event of the Rio Olympics will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET when the women’s soccer team faces Australia in São Paulo. The game is available on CBC television as streamed live at cbc.ca/olympics and on the CBC Rio 2016 app.

The Canadian contingent consists of 315 athletes, including recent additions Ryan Cochrane and Hugues Fournel. The kayaking duo joined the Olympic roster after Canada was awarded two additional quota spots in the men’s K2 200-metre event.
